Kauai Tours Guide the ring that never closed
Full-day Waimea Canyon and Wailua River tour on Kauai

Waimea Canyon Costs $5 to Drive and $187 to Be Driven

Ten canyon tours are listed on Kauai, from $170 to $1,131. The canyon itself is no longer free — Hawaii State Parks charges non-residents $5 per person plus $10 per vehicle, and the same ticket covers Kōkeʻe. Highway 550 takes you to the lookouts under your own steering, so the question is narrow: $5 and a day of mountain driving, or $187 and somebody else's minibus. Four group day tours run $187 to $231 and hold 132 reviews between them. Two wider island days cost $170 and $240. Two private days cost $712 and $1,131, the most expensive products on this site. Two more fly in from Oahu for $576 and fourteen hours. Ratings here spread from 3.6 to 5.0, and they do not follow the price.

01 — Why there is a choice at all

This Is the One Sight on Kauai the Road Actually Reaches

Prices read from the operator catalog on 26 August 2026 · lowest listed price per person

Waimea Canyon is about 14 miles long and up to 3,600 feet deep, and highway 550 climbs the rim to the lookouts. Nowhere else on this site can you say that — the Nā Pali cliffs take a boat from $215, the coast from above takes a flight from $155, and the Wailua is closed to paddling at weekends. Here, a rental car does the job.

What changed is the price of the gate. Hawaii State Parks charges non-residents $5 per person plus $10 per vehicle, and the same ticket covers Kōkeʻe at the top of the road. It is the structure already in place at Hāʻena and on the Wailua, so the island now charges for access almost everywhere. The canyon is cheap, not free.

Which means the ten tours on this page are not selling you the view. They are selling you the day — a driver on a mountain road, a fixed schedule, and stops chosen for you. That is worth $187 to some people and nothing at all to others, so this page prices both, sorts the ten by evidence rather than by cost, and puts the $5 drive in the last row of the same table.

03 — Group one

Waimea Canyon Group Day Tours — $187 to $231, Rated 4.2 to 4.9

Four tours take a minibus up highway 550 and back inside a day. They cost $187, $189, $190 and $231, and between them they hold 132 reviews — two thirds of everything written about the canyon in this catalog. What you are buying for the $182 above the $5 gate fee is a driver, a fixed route and someone else's schedule.

The highest-rated of the four is also the cheapest: 4.9 at $187 for nine hours. That figure rests on 19 reviews, which is a small sample, and the strongest evidence on the page sits one row below it — 4.7 from 72 reviews on the $231 tour, which is also the only sample here above 30. If you want the safest bet rather than the best average, that is the one, and it adds the Wailua River to the day.

Nine and a half hours is the whole of a holiday day, and the canyon does not need that long. The two seven-hour tours at $189 and $190 cover the rim and the west side and hand the afternoon back, and the $190 one carries 4.6 from 24 reviews against 4.2 from 17. Driving it yourself takes about half a day and $5 a head.

04 — Group two

Kauai Island Tours Where Waimea Canyon Is One Stop of Several

Two tours at $170 and $240 treat Waimea as a stop on a wider loop — the Kalalau lookout, the south shore, film locations. Seven to nine hours. If the canyon is the reason you booked, this is not the group to book: the $187 canyon day gives it a whole day instead.

These two also carry the weakest evidence on the page in opposite ways. The $240 tour has 4.5 from eight reviews, a sample too small to mean much either way. The $170 tour has 3.6 from 28, which is the lowest rating anywhere above ten reviews and a sample big enough to take seriously.

The honest version is that price buys nothing predictable in this group. If the wide loop is what you want, the $240 day includes cruise-pier and airport pickup, which the cheaper one does not. If you only want the canyon, drive 550 for $5 or take the $187 tour, and skip both of these.

05 — Group three

Private Kauai Tours at $712 and $1,131 — the Most Expensive on This Site

Two private days are listed: four to six hours at $712, and eight hours at $1,131. Both hold a 5.0 average, and both averages rest on nine and seven reviews. At the top of the price range the evidence is at its thinnest, which is the opposite of what the numbers look like at first glance.

What the money buys is not a better canyon. It is your own group, your own pace, and no strangers in the vehicle. Framed that way it can be worth it for four or five people traveling together. Framed as a canyon ticket it is six times the $187 group day, which covers the same rim road.

One practical detail before you book the $1,131 day — it departs from Hanapēpē on the west side, not from Lihue, so getting to the start is your own drive. The $712 half-day starts on Kauai without a named town. If neither works, the group day tours run $187 to $231 and pick up in Lihue.

Two private days, neither photographed in the catalog

Sixteen reviews between them at the highest prices on the site — too thin to recommend at $712 and $1,131, which is why they are rows.

06 — Group four

From Oahu in a Day — $576 and Fourteen Hours

Two products fly you from Honolulu to Kauai, drive the canyon, and fly you back the same day. Both cost $576. Both take fourteen hours. It is the most expensive way to reach a sight that costs $5 to enter, and the least forgiving: two flights, a bus and a fixed return, with the island's weather in the middle of it.

The ratings say almost nothing yet. One holds 4.8 from four reviews, the other 3.7 from eight. Twelve reviews across two $576 products is not enough to choose between them, and the gap between 4.8 and 3.7 on samples that small is noise rather than a verdict.

If you are staying on Oahu and this is the only way, book it knowing what it is. If you have a night on Kauai, the same canyon is a seven-hour day at $187 or a $5 drive, and the 65-minute flight over the whole island from $155 shows the canyon and the coast without the fourteen hours.

Two $576 day trips, twelve reviews between them. Twelve is not enough to tell them apart, so neither is put forward ahead of the other.

09 — Before you book

Six Things to Know Before Booking a Waimea Canyon Tour

The first is the one most pages still get wrong, because it changed. The canyon is not free any more, and the fee is per person as well as per car.

What the gate costs, and what a tour costs Hawaii State Parks charges non-residents $5 per person plus $10 per vehicle, and the same ticket covers Kōkeʻe at the top of the road. Two people in one car pay $20 for the day.
  • One person, car from$15
  • Two, one car from$20
  • Cheapest tour from$170
  • Best rated day from$187
  • Dearest listed from$1,131

Bars are to scale against $1,131. Fees are the state's published non-resident rates and are collected at the park, not by this site.

The canyon is not free any more

$5 per person plus $10 per vehicle for non-residents, one ticket for both the canyon and Kōkeʻe. It is the same structure already in force at Hāʻena and on the Wailua, so budget for it on every state-park day.

You cannot see Nā Pali from the lookouts

The canyon rim shows you the canyon and the interior, not the sea cliffs. If both are on your list, the 65-minute flight from $155 covers the canyon and all 17 miles of coast in one run.

Driving it is a day at the wheel

Highway 550 climbs the rim in switchbacks, and the driver watches the road rather than the view. That is the honest case for paying $187 — not access, just not driving.

Check the town, not just the price

Two tours pick up in Lihue, the $1,131 private day starts in Hanapēpē on the west side, and two start in Honolulu. A cheap tour that begins an hour's drive away is not cheap.

Read the review count, not the stars

Only one of the ten has been reviewed more than 30 times — 4.7 on 72. A 5.0 on seven reviews and a 4.8 on four tell you almost nothing. The 3.6 on 28 tells you more than either.

The west side is the dry side

A gray morning on the north shore often means a clear afternoon over the canyon, because the two sides of this island have different weather. The season strip on the main guide sets out when each side is at its best.

10 — Questions with numbers in the answers

Waimea Canyon Tours — Ten Questions Answered

Do you have to pay to enter Waimea Canyon?

Yes, if you are not a Hawaii resident. Hawaii State Parks charges $5 per person plus $10 per vehicle, and the same ticket covers Kōkeʻe. Two people in one car pay $20 for the day, against $170 for the cheapest tour that goes there.

Can you drive to Waimea Canyon yourself?

Yes. Highway 550 climbs to the lookouts and on to Kōkeʻe, and a rental car reaches all of them for the $5 and $10 fees. That is 37 times cheaper than the $187 guided day. The cost is your own attention on a switchback road for half a day.

Is a Waimea Canyon tour worth $187?

It is worth it if you would rather not drive. Nine hours, the canyon and Kōkeʻe, rated 4.9 on 19 reviews — the highest average on this page and a small sample. If driving does not bother you, the same lookouts cost $5 a head.

How deep is Waimea Canyon?

Hawaii State Parks gives it as about 14 miles long and up to 3,600 feet deep. The figure often repeated as 900 meters is a mistranslation of that number, so if a page tells you 900 meters it has copied someone else's error.

Which Waimea Canyon tour is best?

By evidence, the $231 nine-and-a-half-hour tour — 4.7 from 72 reviews, the only sample above 30 here, and it adds the Wailua River. By average, the $187 day at 4.9 from 19. Avoid assuming the cheapest is fine: the $170 tour holds 3.6 from 28 reviews.

Why does one canyon tour cost $170 and another $1,131?

Because you are buying the vehicle, not the view. $170 is a nine-hour seat on a wide island loop; $1,131 is eight hours with nobody else in the car, departing Hanapēpē. Both reach the same rim road, which costs $5 a person to enter.

Is the Waimea Canyon day trip from Oahu worth $576?

It is the riskiest way to see the canyon — fourteen hours, two flights and a fixed return, at 3.1 times the price of the same day booked on Kauai. The two listings hold 4.8 on four reviews and 3.7 on eight, which is too little to separate them. With a night on Kauai, $187 does the same job.

What is Kōkeʻe State Park?

The state park at the top of the same road, covered by the same $5 and $10 entry. Two listings name it in the title — the $187 nine-hour day from Kauai and the $576 fourteen-hour day from Honolulu. Driving up 550 reaches it on the one ticket.

Can you see the Nā Pali Coast from Waimea Canyon?

Not from the canyon lookouts — they face the interior. For the coast you need the water or the air: boats from $215 or a 65-minute flight from $155, which shows the canyon on the same loop.

How long do you need for Waimea Canyon?

Half a day driving it yourself. Guided, the shortest options are the seven-hour tours at $189 and $190, and the longest is nine and a half hours at $231, which also takes in the Wailua River. Nine hours is the middle of the group at $170 and $187.
